I love when challenging days end sweetly, especially when that sweetness is literal.
Today, was, well, a bit of a challenge. Hayden had some sort of stomach bug yesterday; Gabe has a wheeze, a deep cough, and a fever developed yesterday. So, today, I was home with both, took both to Gabe’s doctor appointment, and was disappointed over and over that I didn’t get a chance to work on the spreadsheet that needs to be done by next week.
I also didn’t get my standard 15 minute pumping breaks, so I didn’t get much read of my current book in process. (Middlesex is a wonder, much as Eugenides’ other book, Virgin Suicides, was.)
Even the discovery of Hayden’s kangaroo tail didn’t keep him a happy toddler all day. There was a bad temper tantrum, hitting, and our son no longer has a room full of toys. (They are all in his closet, to be distributed one at a time on days which are filled with good behavior.)
But, the snow fell last night and today. We had evaporated milk in the pantry. Snow ice cream was made and enjoyed. I look forward to future snow days, hopefully when the boys aren’t sick.
Kris went out and bought Rock Band. Thank you, Federal Government.
The past couple of weeks have been filled with variations on a playful argument.
Brianna: “We have no place for this game’s drum set and guitar. Where do you plan to store this safely away from cats and kids?”
Kris: “We don’t really have room for you book addiction either. Those built in book shelves? You are overflowing.”
Brianna: “How about you give me the two book shelves that house all of your television shows?”
Kris: “Where do you suggest they go?”
Brianna: “The media center.”
Generally, this ends with a hug and a love pat.
I brought home 13 books today. God bless the 50% off clearance shelf sale at Half Price. I spent less than $10. I have a feeling Kris told me to go splurge at Half Price after he had brought home the new game and accessories. But I ran with it.
I have to admit, this is fun. It’s almost as good as having karaoke in the basement, too, since a rock band needs a singer. I’m impressed with how much the microphone picks up. The guitar is far beyond me. The drums, I can handle on easy, most of the time. I’ll stick with the vocals, I think.
It has been a wonderful snow day at our place. While I didn’t get to sleep in (and even showered on my normal schedule), I did find out that work was closed before I got into work clothes.
Hayden and Kris took to the very icy hill behind our house. I took to book number twelve in 2008 (The Devil Wears Prada is a fun read, even if you aren’t an avid follower of the fashion world) and we’ve spoiled ourselves with cookies. I wanted to do snow ice cream, but the snow wasn’t the right quality or depth for us to attempt that this storm… freezing rain will keep me off the roads, but doesn’t do much else for me.
We’ve watched more television than a normal day, but still not as much as I’m sure most other households are tuning in for today. Yvette will love this piece of news… Hayden LOVES to watch “the weather.” If a news show is on, but the weatherman isn’t, he’s not happy. We have introduced him to the Weather Channel, and he will stay as long as we let him.
We also started a new xBox game, Eternal Sonata. So not a typical xBox game, I love it!
This is a test. If this were a real post you would see some actual content like an explanation that Hayden is doing well since his surgery and may now like spaghetti for some reason. Perhaps there would be an update on Gabe starting to eat solid food and working on his second tooth.
Again, if this were an actual post you’d get actual content and not just pictures that demonstrate our boys’ cuteness and Hayden’s drastic need of a haircut.
On my ride into work today, I listened to a story on NPR featuring a football player from 1972, Larry Czonka, who played on the last team to play a perfect season (including a Superbowl win), the Miami Dolphins. I was drawn into the story. I found myself smiling at what the man had to say, thinking that he had some wisdom in his words.
The perfect season changed his life, most definitely, even though he may not have known it at the time. It took ten years of life before he realized the impact the season had on him and the rest of the world. Hindsight is everything.
I am on a strong series kick. Wonder if I’ll stick with it… Card has a few series I haven’t begun yet (yes, Kris, many of them are already on our shelves)… and the Prydain series (Lloyd Alexander) is one I’ve meant to read for a long time, now.
I love being an Early Reviewer at Library Thing… my second free book, while not as perfect as the first, is still decent, especially for being a no cost item in my library.
